Sports Equipment Storage in San Diego: Space for Boards, Bikes & More

Last updated Aug 7, 2026

Surfboards, bicycles, golf clubs, camping supplies, and water-sports equipment can take up more room than expected. When gear starts crowding balconies, closets, entryways, or shared garages, a storage unit may provide a more organized alternative.

Self storage is not automatically necessary for every athlete or outdoor enthusiast. The right choice depends on the amount of equipment, available space at home, how frequently the gear is used, and whether the selected unit can accommodate each item safely.

SecureSpace operates two San Diego facilities with different features. Rancho Penasquitos offers climate-controlled options, while San Diego Encanto provides standard storage.

Why Sports Gear Can Be Difficult to Store at Home

Many San Diego renters live in housing without a private garage or dedicated equipment room. According to HUD's Comprehensive Housing Market Analysis, approximately 67% of renter households in the San Diego Housing Market Area lived in multifamily structures in 2023-up from 64% in 2010.

That does not mean every apartment lacks storage, but surfboards, bicycles, golf bags, tents, and paddling equipment can be difficult to fit into smaller floor plans.

Housing costs may also make moving to a larger home solely for additional storage impractical. The San Diego Housing Commission reports on ongoing efforts to create and preserve affordable rental housing amid a shortage of homes families can afford.

A storage unit can keep recreational gear together without permanently occupying a hallway, spare room, or part of the living area.

Measure the Equipment Before Choosing a Unit

Sports equipment does not pack as predictably as household boxes. A longboard, bicycle, golf travel case, or paddleboard may require more usable length than its overall square footage suggests.

Measure:

  • The longest surfboard or paddleboard

  • Bicycle length and handlebar width

  • Golf bags and hard travel cases

  • Shelving or freestanding racks

  • Kayaks or other oversized equipment

  • The aisle needed to retrieve frequently used gear

Also consider the route into the unit. Bulky items must fit through entrances, elevators, hallways, and unit doors-not just within the listed floor dimensions.

Storage Sizes for Different Gear Collections

Both SecureSpace San Diego locations offer sizes from 5x5 through 10x30. The examples below are planning starting points rather than fit guarantees.

5x5 Units for Compact Collections

A 5x5 may suit smaller gear such as bodyboards, wetsuits, golf clubs, balls, helmets, folded tents, or several containers of accessories.

Full-sized bicycles and long surfboards may fit differently depending on their dimensions, rack placement, door clearance, and the amount of access space required. Measure before assuming a compact unit will work.

5x10 Units for Longer Equipment

The additional length of a 5x10 may be useful for surfboards, bicycles, golf travel cases, camping equipment, or a combination of several sports.

This size may also leave room for a rack or narrow aisle, although the actual layout depends on the equipment and unit configuration.

10x10 and Larger Units for Multi-Sport Storage

Larger spaces may be appropriate for households storing several bicycles, multiple boards, bulky camping equipment, event supplies, or recreational gear alongside other belongings.

Avoid selecting a unit based only on generalized household-capacity estimates. Creating a simple floor plan with item measurements provides a more reliable picture of what will fit.

Prepare Sports Equipment Before Storage

Gear should enter storage clean, dry, and ready to remain unused for the expected rental period.

Surfboards and Paddleboards

Rinse away salt, sand, and dirt, then let the board dry completely. Repair damage according to the manufacturer's guidance before placing the board into long-term storage.

Use a suitable bag, padded rack, or support system that does not place excessive pressure on the nose, tail, rails, or fins. Remove detachable fins when appropriate and keep related hardware in a labeled container.

Do not assume that horizontal or vertical positioning is universally best. Follow the board manufacturer's recommendations and consider the available clearance.

Bicycles and E-Bikes

Clean the frame, drivetrain, wheels, and braking components before storage. Lubricate parts according to the manufacturer's instructions rather than applying products indiscriminately.

For an e-bike, inspect the battery for swelling, cracks, leaks, heat damage, corrosion, or recall notices. Follow the manufacturer's directions for charge level, removal, and storage conditions.

Do not charge batteries or operate powered equipment inside a unit unless the facility expressly permits it. Damaged or recalled batteries may require specialized handling rather than ordinary self storage.

Golf Clubs

Clean dirt and grass from clubheads and allow grips, towels, shoes, and accessories to dry. Use headcovers where appropriate and avoid placing heavy containers on top of golf bags.

Golf travel cases can take up considerably more space than standard bags, so include the case dimensions when selecting a unit.

Wetsuits and Water-Sports Accessories

Rinse wetsuits, flotation devices, boots, gloves, and similar equipment with fresh water when recommended. Let each item dry thoroughly before packing it.

Avoid sealing damp gear inside bins or bags. Trapped moisture may lead to odors or material deterioration.

Camping and Hiking Equipment

Dry tents, sleeping bags, tarps, and backpacks before storage. Empty food, liquids, fuel, and scented products from packs and camp kitchens.

Fuel canisters, propane cylinders, flammable liquids, and similar materials may be prohibited. Review the rental agreement before bringing camping supplies to the facility.

Consider Temperature Exposure Without Overstating the Risk

San Diego conditions vary by neighborhood and property. A coastal balcony, inland garage, interior closet, and shaded storage area will not expose gear to identical conditions.

Salt residue, sunlight, dust, moisture, and significant temperature changes may affect certain materials over time. Cleaning equipment, drying it thoroughly, using suitable covers, and following manufacturer guidance remain important regardless of the storage setting.

Rancho Penasquitos offers climate-controlled units that may help reduce exposure to significant temperature swings. Climate control does not guarantee protection from corrosion, moisture, fading, cracking, mold, pests, or other deterioration, and humidity regulation should not be assumed.

San Diego Encanto does not offer climate-controlled storage.

Organize the Unit Around How Often You Use the Gear

A unit that holds everything is not necessarily arranged well.

Keep frequently used items-such as golf clubs, surfboards, or a primary bicycle-near the entrance. Seasonal camping supplies, spare equipment, and backup gear can sit farther back.

A practical arrangement may include:

Avoid leaning expensive or delicate equipment against unstable stacks. Leave enough room to move items without dragging them across neighboring gear.

Sports Storage During Military Moves

A deployment, Permanent Change of Station move, temporary assignment, or housing transition can create a short- or medium-term need for equipment storage.

Both San Diego SecureSpace locations offer month-to-month leases. This may provide flexibility when the rental period is uncertain, but current rates, billing terms, notice requirements, and move-out procedures still apply.

Before leaving the area, determine who may access the unit, how payments will be handled, and whether another person should be authorized on the account.

Do not assume that a military discount is available. Review current rental terms when choosing a unit.

SecureSpace Storage Options in San Diego

The two San Diego facilities share some features, but they are not interchangeable.

Both locations provide:

  • An access gate

  • Digital video recording

Review Rental Details Before Move-In

Storage prices and promotions can change based on facility, unit size, floor level, access type, climate-control availability, and inventory.

Before renting, review:

  • The current monthly rate

  • The length and conditions of any promotion

  • Administrative or move-in charges

  • Lock and coverage requirements

  • Rate-adjustment terms

  • Access and move-out procedures

Encanto is cash-free, while Rancho Penasquitos accepts cash. Online payments and ACH or credit card payment plans are available at both locations.

Month-to-month leasing does not guarantee a fixed rate, no fees, proration, or freedom from notice requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Size Unit Works for a Surfboard and Bicycle?

A 5x10 may provide useful length for a surfboard and bicycle, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed minimum or universal recommendation.

Measure the board, bike, rack, handlebars, and desired aisle space. Confirm the route into the selected unit as well.

Is Climate-Controlled Storage Necessary for Sports Equipment?

Not always. The decision depends on the materials, manufacturer guidance, expected rental period, packaging, and conditions where the gear would otherwise be stored.

Climate-controlled options are available at Rancho Penasquitos. Encanto offers standard storage only.

Can I Store an E-Bike?

An e-bike may be eligible, but battery condition and facility rules matter. Follow the manufacturer's storage guidance, inspect for damage or recalls, and confirm whether the battery must be removed.

Do not charge the bike inside the unit unless expressly permitted.

Can I Store Camping Fuel With My Equipment?

Do not assume fuel, propane, compressed gas, or flammable liquids are permitted. Review the prohibited-items policy and remove restricted materials before move-in.

Are Carts and Dollies Available?

Yes. Carts and dollies are available at Rancho Penasquitos and Encanto for suitable loads, although availability may vary while other customers are using them.

Does SecureSpace Guarantee Protection Against Theft?

No storage facility can guarantee protection against theft or loss.

Both San Diego locations have an access gate, digital video recording, logged access, and overnight surveillance. Rancho also has Turing-enabled monitoring.

Give Your Gear a More Organized Home Base

Sports storage should make it easier to use your equipment-not simply move a crowded collection from one place to another.

Measure oversized items, clean and dry everything before packing, follow battery and equipment instructions, and select a layout that keeps frequently used gear accessible.
